What is Ebru?

Ebru, also known as Turkish Paper Marbling, is a traditional art form where colors are gently floated on the surface of water and then transferred onto paper. Each piece is unique — created by the natural movement of pigments and the artist’s hand.

This centuries-old art has its roots in Central Asia and flourished in the Ottoman Empire, especially in book decoration and calligraphy. Today, Ebru continues to enchant people all over the world with its flowing patterns and vibrant colors.

The process of Ebru is as magical as its results. Natural pigments are sprinkled onto water thickened with a special solution, where they spread and float. With delicate brushes and simple tools, the artist shapes the colors into flowers, leaves, or abstract designs. Finally, paper is carefully laid on the water’s surface to capture the image.

Ebru is more than a visual art — it is a meditation on patience, harmony, and the beauty of nature. No two marblings are ever the same, making each one truly one of a kind.
